Top Ten Worst Premier League signings of the season

Dave Kitson Reading to Stoke City £5.5m

I have to say that when I first saw the price that City had paid for the flame haired striker I did a double take and my first thought was “that’s a waste of money!” It’s not that I don’t rate the former Reading man (now back at the Royals on loan) it’s more that I found the price to be ridiculously over inflated and so it has proved.  The 29 year old hasn’t managed a single goal for the struggling Premier League side. Expect a return to the Madejski in the summer.

Deco Barcelona to Chelsea £8m

This diminutive midfielder started his Stamford Bridge career with a bang with goals in his first two games, including a beauty on his debut but since then he has been a massive disappointment. The former Barca man has stuttered badly since then, drifting in and out of games and sometimes wandering around the pitch aimlessly. Signs point to a likely exit in the summer.

Deco: Failed to live up to the hype

Jo CSKA Moscow to Man City £18m

For sheer financial reasoning alone this Brazilian makes this list. He arrived for £18m scored a couple of goals in Cyprus and then another in the rout of Pompey in August and then….well nothing. He has failed to net in the dozen games since and then found himself out of the pecking order. Thankfully the Brazilian was thrown a lifeline in the form of a so far very successful loan spell at Goodison Park. Will Mark Hughes recoup anywhere near the fee his side paid CSKA if they sell him to David Moyes’s side, simple answer, no!

Xisco Deportivo La Coruna to Newcastle £5.7m

To say that this signing was a waste of £5.7m would be an understatement. Yes he’s still only a youngster but this 22 year old striker has shown nothing to suggest he has the potential to significantly improve and to top it all off Kevin Keegan (who was in charge at the time of Xisco’s arrival) didn’t want to sign the Deportivo man in the first place! You’d think the club would have learned the lesson of the last player they signed from the La Liga side, That was Albert Luque no less!

Johan Elmander Toulouse to Bolton £11m

Yes the Swede has managed five goals this season and he does run around a lot but the price they paid for the Toulouse man has proved to be a one big rip off, and to be honest I think many Bolton fans knew it would be.

David Bentley Blackburn Rovers to Spurs £15m

Whilst there is still time for the midfield maestro to redeem himself and prove that his move from Blackburn back to north London wasn’t a big waste of money it doesn’t seem likely to happen when he is sitting on the bench. The 24 year old has started just two Premier League games this year and given that this has coincided with Tottenham’s best run of results this season it doesn’t look like Harry was wrong to not name him in the starting lineup very often.

Nicky Shorey Reading to Aston Villa £3m

Martin O’Neill consistently states that this England international has a future at the club but then consistently fails to play name him in the starting lineup. Didn’t start to brightly in the Claret and Blue and now seems to have lost his place to Luke Young. Perhaps another man on his way back to Reading? Hasn’t started a Premier League game since November, when Aston Villa lost at home to Boro.

Philipp Degen Borussia Dortmund to Liverpool Free

Yes he was free and yes he has been injured for great swathes of the season but I can still not see the wisdom of this Rafa Benitez signing. Clearly this guy isn’t good enough to play for a side as big as Liverpool and why he was ever signed is a mystery to many. Note: Andrea Dossena’s good performances of late have earned him the respect of not being on this list.

Robbie Keane Spurs to Liverpool £20.3m

Whether you come from the standpoint that Robbie was never given enough of a chance at Anfield or from the angle that says the Irishman just didn’t perform well enough to warrant more of a run in the team, either way it’s clear this transfer was a big failure. Thankfully for Spurs fans the striker is bang in form now and helping them push on out of the relegation mire and within reach of the top half of the table.

Marvin Emnes Sparta Rotterdam to Middlesbrough, £3.2m

Middlesbrough have a habit of buying players who no one has heard of. It’s not like they end up being untapped talents that show the remarkable scouting system in operation at the Riverside, these guys generally end up showing little in the way of talent and are offloaded (Dong would be the best example of this). Emnes has not exactly impressed, mind you he did score on his only start for the club thus far but that was against Yeovil.
